The Carson Mansion now known as the Ingomar Club. This building in Eureka, CA is considered by many the highest and finest achievement of Victorian design in the USA. It was built in 1885. It is now a private club and generally off limits to the public. In some respects, the design is almost too busy, over the top. Is there a single Victorian style element they left out? We can't imagine the annual painting and maintenance costs for the exterior alone. The interior is fabulous; Google "Images Interior of Ingomar Club Eureka CA".

If you lived on a barrier island (sand bar) anywhere from the Gulf of Mexico Coast up the east coast as far as New Jersey, your house would be built up off the ground like this so the extra high storm tides merely flow under your dwelling. This house and the others like it for miles up and down the coast just experienced Hurricane Harvey. This was taken right where the hurricane made landfall. Most of these houses will receive some damage but many of them will survive quite well.
